Why proteomics matters

Why immune biology needs clarity and confident protein insights

Immune responses are coordinated, regulated, and carried out by dynamic protein signaling events. By measuring thousands of cytokines, chemokines, receptors, and other immune-related proteins simultaneously, you gain a clearer view of immune activities, enabling you to pinpoint meaningful immune protein signatures as you study diseases and cohorts.

Immune mechanisms

Understand the cytokines, chemokines, and immune proteins that drive immune response and regulation.

Disease biology

Explore protein signatures associated with infection, autoimmunity, inflammatory diseases, and immune dysregulation.

Immune modulation

Study how therapeutic interventions change immune signaling dynamics and protein signatures.

Biomarker insights

Identify meaningful immune protein signatures that can support translational research and drug development programs.

Biological variation

See how immune protein signatures differ across individuals and disease states.

    Platform comparison
Scaling your immunology research from discovery to translation

The scalable Olink proteomics platform helps you move beyond narrow immune marker analysis with the specificity, sensitivity, and scalability needed to study complex immune biology. From broad pathway exploration to focused biomarker follow-up studies, Olink panels enable high-specificity, high-quality, and high-throughput protein insights for immunology research.

    Traditional immune biomarker research

    Olink proteomics advantages

Focus on a few cytokines or single biomarkers, giving limited view of immune complexity

Measure thousands of proteins across immune pathways to reveal disease-specific signatures, molecular endotypes, and dynamic pathways

May struggle to accurately distinguish between closely related immune proteins

Low cross-reactivity supports highly specific measurement of highly homologous immune proteins

Have a limited detection range and low sensitivity that can miss low abundance proteins

Detect proteins, including low expressors, across a dynamic range spanning 10 orders of magnitude

Require large sample volumes, which is challenging for studies with extremely precious samples

Requires as little as 1 µL of sample volume

High variability often requires more replicates for confident interpretation

    Enables high reproducibility

      Application spotlight
Explore immune signatures associated with prediction and response

Comprehensive proteomic profiling can help uncover biomarkers associated with immune responses, disease progression, disease risk and severity, and treatment response. By measuring thousands of proteins across pathways, you can discover molecular endotypes, compare disease-associated signatures, and gain insight into potential stratification and therapy selection strategies for translational research.

      PEA technology
High specificity, sensitivity and dynamic range

Olink PEA technology combines the specificity of dual antibodies with the sensitivity of PCR. This unique design enables accurate protein detection without cross-reactivity and delivers a dynamic range of 10 orders of magnitude. With integrated DNA barcodes and NGS readout, researchers can measure over 5,000 proteins across hundreds of samples in a single run.

        Voices of immunology researchers

Hear how scientists are leveraging Olink proteomics to unravel immune complexity.

With its ability to provide precise concentrations of various cytokines in both inflamed and healthy skin, Olink Flex was instrumental in distinguishing between different inflammatory skin conditions. Moreover, while using minimal volumes of skin interstitial fluid, Olink Flex has demonstrated its capability to detect cytokines such as type I Interferons, which are challenging to identify through our next-generation sequencing data.

To begin, it’s helpful to have a broad overview of key cytokine types, such as those included in the Olink Target 48 Cytokine panel, which we routinely use in most of our clinical [research] studies. The panel is largely sufficient for the types of cytokines we are interested in, like proinflammatory mediators.
